1. Why take the Defensive Driving Course?

The Defensive Driving Course is certified by the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles to assist individuals with the following:

• Employment Driving Permit (completion required within 60 days of permit authorization)
• License Reinstatement
• Two Point Credit to your driving record
• Under Age 21 Six Point Accumulation

Please note, the 8-Hour Defensive Driving Course will not dismiss a specific traffic ticket received in Sarpy County.

Two-Point Credit

To receive the two-point credit, the class must be completed on a voluntary basis. If the DMV is requiring the course for reinstatement or to prevent suspension for the Under Age 21 Point Accumulation, it will not be used for the point credit. This program can only be utilized once every five years and the course must be completed prior to the date of violation that would assess the 12th point on the driving record.

Located at the southeast corner of 84th Street and Platteview Road, Papillion.

Directions

1. From 84th Street / Highway 370, travel south on 84th Street (approximately 2 to 3 miles)
2. Once you reach Platteview Road, do not turn left
3. 84th Street will begin to curve to the right
4. On that curve, turn left
5. Turn left onto the access road leading to the north parking lot
6. Enter Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office through the north door. The classroom is just inside

Office hours are 8 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday (excluding holidays). If registering online or by phone, you will receive an email containing the following details about the class you selected: 

• Date and time of class
• Location and local driving directions to the class
• What to bring to class

6. How does the DMV receive notice that I have taken this class?

• After class, the instructor will hand you a completion certificate. You can keep that for your records. If you are taking this class to satisfy a requirement of the Nebraska DMV, the Sarpy County Safety Program will notify the Lincoln Department of Motor Vehicles within 3 business days of the class that you have completed the class.
• If you are taking this class to satisfy a requirement for a state other than Nebraska, check with your state before registering to determine if this class meets their requirements. The completion certificate you receive at the end of class is your proof that you have taken the class. You must make arrangements to send them a copy of that completion certificate.

7. What if there is a weather cancellation?

If a class is canceled due to deteriorating weather conditions, a cancellation notice will be posted on local television stations KETV, WOWT, and KMTV and/or their websites.
