Sarpy County Board Appoints Jeff Mikesell as Treasurer
Jeff Mikesell is Sarpy County’s new Treasurer.
The Sarpy County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday, September 12, voted 4-0 to appoint Mikesell to the position.
"We have a dedicated group of experts in the Treasurer’s Office who have set the standard for what great public service looks like. Our goal in this appointment is to make a strong team even stronger, and we’re fortunate to have found an experienced and thoughtful leader in our new Treasurer, Jeff Mikesell,” Sarpy County Board Chair Angi Burmeister said.
Mikesell replaces Trace Jones, who resigned effective August 31 after a successful tenure improving operations and drastically reducing wait times. Nebraska law provides that a vacancy in the Treasurer’s Office is filled by appointment by the County Board to serve the remainder of the official's 4-year term.
Mikesell, of Papillion, is a senior operations executive who most recently served as the Director of Military Affairs for the Greater Omaha Chamber. He spent more than two decades in the United States Air Force and was involved in several high-profile projects, including the $1.2 billion USSTRATCOM construction project, $1.1 billion Offutt Air Force Base flood rebuild and $150 million Offutt runway replacement.
"I’m honored to join a team who knows what it means to serve so well and so reliably. They’re an impressive group doing important work,” Mikesell said. “I look forward to working with Dan (Toleikis) and serving the staff and taxpayers at the Treasurer’s Office.”
His first day is Friday, September 15. The Sarpy County Treasurer’s term runs through January 2027.
Ten people applied for the position during the application period. The board during a public meeting on Sept. 5 interviewed the candidates who qualified for an interview through a screening process, including Mikesell.
Mikesell’s application is available online.
