Public trust in law enforcement eroded after the tragic death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and several other nationwide cases. To help regain public trust, Sarpy County Sheriff Jeff Davis opted to have outside experts review the operations of the Sheriff’s Office to ensure we are held to the highest level of accountability, especially since our personnel are continually entrusted to honorably serve the public and to use professional standards to ensure community expectations are met.
In November 2020, the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office applied for accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). The purpose of accreditation is to improve public service by maintaining and following comprehensive law enforcement standards set by seasoned law enforcement personnel, researchers and accreditation experts. These standards include internal and external reviews of policies, procedures, ethics, recruitment, hiring, training and discipline. There is also an emphasis on best practices regarding Use-of-Force training and Internal Affairs Investigations.
On July 29, three Sheriff’s Office commanders participated in a CALEA review hearing held in Oklahoma City. At the conclusion, CALEA awarded accreditation to the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office and the Sarpy County Juvenile Justice Center.
Sheriff Davis offers special thanks to Lt. Dan Golda, Sgt. Bruce Meyer and Dep. Kelli Waller. Without their great effort and dedication, this lofty goal of accreditation would not have been achieved.
