Sarpy County Seeks Applicants to Fill Treasurer Vacancy
Sarpy County is seeking applicants to fill the Sarpy County Treasurer position. Nebraska law provides that a vacancy in the Treasurer’s Office is filled by appointment by the County Board to serve the remainder of the official's 4-year term (January 2023-January 2026).
The Sarpy County Treasurer must fulfill responsibilities pursuant to Nebraska State Statutes. Candidates must be a resident of Sarpy County and a registered voter to qualify for this position. While not statutorily required, the ideal candidate will have a background in management and finance or banking.
Applicants should provide an email or letter of interest, resume and three references to the Sarpy County Clerk at clerk@sarpy.gov or deliver to the Clerk’s Office at 1210 Golden Gate Drive, Papillion, NE 68046 by 4:45 p.m. on Friday, August 18, 2023. A list of applicants who have filed will be available for inspection in the County Clerk’s office.
The Sarpy County Treasurer’s Office is responsible for statutory duties, in addition to receipting all designated funds due the County and disbursing payments. All property tax payments made to the County flow through County Treasurer-operated bank accounts and is receipted in by staff.
The Treasurer’s Office also receives payments that are due to other entities (e.g., State of Nebraska, special assessments), which are then distributed. In addition, the office operates Motor Vehicles Renewals/Registrations, which allows for the collection of other fees and responsibilities related to motor vehicle registration and titles.
Other responsibilities include management and reconciliation of all County Treasurer-operated bank accounts, payment, and processing of County checks issued by the Treasurer, and receipting of all County funds into the accounting system.
The County Treasurer also serves as the County’s tax collector and is responsible for the oversight of the distribution of property taxes to Sarpy County’s taxing bodies.
The Treasurer controls the internal operations of the office subject to the budget oversight of the County Board. As such, the treasurer procures the necessary equipment, materials and services to perform the duties of the office. Additional duties prescribed by statute or County regulations include but are not limited to: preparing, presenting and filing monthly financial reports to the Sarpy County Board; maintaining the County’s general funds; tracking the County’s receivables and obligations; and stewarding the County’s investments.
The Treasurer’s Office has a staff of 29, including the Treasurer. The office collects and distributes about $600 million a year in property and motor vehicle taxes and fees, and has an annual operating budget of a little over $2 million. The salary for the County Treasurer has been set at $106,424 for FY2023.
